One may not promote a “horse tripping event”.
It is illegal for the owner of a bar to allow anyone inside to pretend to have sex with a buffalo.
Oklahoma will not tolerate anyone taking a bite out of another’s hamburger.–This one I must concur… 😉
Whaling is illegal.-because I guess in OKLAHOMA it was a big issue…we’re so close to the ocean and all…
It is illegal to have the hind legs of farm animals in your boots.–This one I’m just afraid to know the reason behind…
Tissues are not to be found in the back of one’s car.–Well…this one I have broken. 😉 I have kids, I must have tissues…
Living in Oklahoma, I did a search for stupid laws here…I’m sure everyone has them. I just cannot even imagine WHY these are actual laws on the books. Were the legs of farm animals in someone’s boots a PROBLEM in the past?? Seriously…whaling? In Oklahoma? Where?
No, you are right, this isn’t random….it’s our Lesson. Have you guessed it yet?
Of course….the 10 commandments! And last week we learned that in Biblical numerology, 10 represented the FULLNESS of something. Last week, we saw the FULLNESS of God’s judgements, this week we are taking a look at the FULLNESS of God’s moral law.
And HOW God revealed them is an event I WISH I could have been present for, or at least have it live on DVR so I could experience it!
God calls Moses from the mountain and tells Moses what to say to the Isrealites. He first tells them:
‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.”
Let me break it down for you: God is reminding them what He has ALREADY done for them. “Look! I brought you out of slavery in ways that BLEW YOUR MIND! I kept you SAFE! If you keep My commands, you will be SUPERSTARS! I will make you AWESOMENESS on earth!” (Yes….obviously, the Bible according to Dana….) Pretty much: He reveals the LOVE He has for them, what He DID for them already, and what He’s planning to do for them in the future.
That’s significant! And maybe a lesson for us parents who are struggling with older children….”I LOVE YOU! Wasn’t it great going to Silver Dollar City and laughing so much? We had a lot of fun that weekend. We bought you a mountain of souvenirs! I’ll help you get into COLLEGE! 😀 But for right now…can you just not stomp up and down the stairs for me? It rattles the picture frames on the wall.” OK, maybe God’s method was better than mine…but you get the idea.
But these people were able to experience FIRSTHAND the presence of God. My mind cannot even wrap around the KNOWLEDGE of that! I have experienced the presence of God, but in NO WAY in comparison with this!
God instructed them to first sanctify themselves….be set apart. I get this. In my own feeble brain, I know that I am not always Godly, and I cannot go to Him fully if I am not set apart or in the right frame of mind. And God instructed them to wash their clothes first. No, God is not a picky Man with sensitive nostrils and doesn’t like the smell of goat in the morning. This was an OUTWARD expression of the INWARD cleansing He wanted them to have. Again…goes back to frame of mind. He wanted them ready to meet Him.
Oh wow….I am SO THERE….the goosebumps I get at the THOUGHT of seeing a VISUAL representation of His presence…
God descended on that mountain in smoke, and the very MOUNTAIN quaked at His presence! Thunder rumbled and lightning flashed….can you see this?? Can you close your eyes and IMAGINE what that must have been like?
Now, let me throw another idea at you….Jesus made God APPROACHABLE. The Isrealites were given STRICT instruction NOT to approach the mountain or they would DIE. Jesus made it POSSIBLE for us to approach God. We are the sons of God.
OK, I must carry on or I’ll be here all night doing this. LOL
The 10 commandments….The FULLNESS of God’s moral law. Can you say them?
I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol.
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
Honor your father and mother (families are sacred and the foundation of society.)
You shall not kill (God is the Giver of life. Our society has taken it into our hands and made acceptable abominations: abortions, euthanasia, genocide, some would even say the death penalty. That’s not a debate I want to start.)
You shall not commit adultery (looking outside of our marriage at ANYTHING to satisfy our lusts whether mentally, emotionally or PHYSICALLY, is wrong. Pornography of any form…and yes, ladies, this DOES include those heated romance novels. I hate to tell you…)
You shall not steal (some Theologians say this includes kidnapping)
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife (Being content with what we have.)
You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor (Whenever the desire for
things rules our lives, the priorities of relationships with people
and with God suffer. Regular generous giving is a potent antidote
to covetousness. The Lord promises to care and provide for His
people in every way.Violation of the Tenth Commandment is a
faithless slur against God. The Lord is enough for all our needs.
No one and nothing can meet our needs as God can.)
The first 4 deal with our relationship with GOD, our Holy and Heavenly Father. He wants absolute loyalty, allegiance, He is the ONLY God. Just the BEST God…but the ONLY one. There is NO OTHERS. We must never worship another for as it says in the New Testament, it is actually worshiping demons. We must take Him SERIOUSLY, we must respect Him and His name. Laughing and joking around about the “Big Man upstairs” is even thought to be taking Him lightly and disrespectfully. Using His name followed with “damn it” is using it to curse something, again disrespectfully.
OOPS…did I step on some toes there? Sorry…I left my own down as well as I stomped on them a little too. God convicted me of my mouth in the summer and that’s one phrase I confessed and have not said it since. Or if I have, I’ve repented.
And the last 6 deal with our relationship with OTHERS. Fidelity to the
Lord is meaningless and hypocritical if people treat one another
without compassion, respect, and integrity. How can we worship God one minute, and yet have zero respect or love of any kind for other people the next?
Make sense? I know I started off the Lesson with stupid laws because I wanted to show the comparison between PEOPLE making laws and God’s PERFECT laws. And no, not all of our laws are stupid, most of them are just fine and keep society running pretty smoothly, but we are NOT perfect, and we are NOT God.
And let me just end this with: NO ONE IS PERFECT. No one can keep the rules ALL the time. We sin. We are not perfect. There was only ONE that was perfect, and He died on the cross so that when we DO break the law, we can be forgiven. God knows we are human. God knows we are not perfect, He made us! But He also made it possible, out of His divine LOVE for us, to bring us back into fellowship with Him when we do sin.
And that is vital for our survival. We just simply must ask His forgiveness…..and try to do better next time. 😉
